Celtic Universities International

(L to R) Georgia Mellotte, Ross McAuliffe and Aobhna Buckely representing UCC and Ireland at the Celtic Universities International in Cardiff. 

Congratulations to Ross McAuliffe of SWSC and UCC who won the 50m & 100m backstroke at the Celtic Universities International in Cardiff on April 13. The Irish Universities won this annual competition against the Welsh and Scottish Universities. Also pictured are the other two UCC swimmers on the Irish team, Georgia Mellotte from Westport who was second in the 100m breast stroke and part of the winning Medley Relay,  and Aobhna Buckley from Waterford, who was third in the 100m backstroke.

Limerick Distance Gala

Session 1 warm-up on Sunday is 8am Male, 8:25am Female with a start time of 9am. Session 2 warm-up is estimated as 1pm Male, 1:25pm Female with a start time of 2pm. Please note that swimmers must be supervised by a Coach or Team Manager during warm-ups.

Scratch Sheets for each club will be available for collection at 8am from the recorders desk Sunday morning. They must be returned to the desk no later than 8.20am

Heat Sheets will follow for collection from the recorders desk once scratches are dealt with.

Programmes will be available for sale on deck the morning of the Meet. 

We have a full house so would ask all Coaches and Team Managers to ensure swimmers present in the call room on time in order to run the meet without delays. 

Please note the last 2 events of the day have been combined into a Mixed 1500m f/c.

Swim Ireland Level 2 Blended Swimming Coach Course – Limerick

This qualification builds on the knowledge, skills and abilities developed in the Swim Ireland Level 1 Assistant Swimming Coach qualification. When achieved it ensures swimming coaches can effectively and independently plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate a series of coaching lessons

Prerequisites

You must be at least 16 years of age by the start of the course. Hold a valid Safeguarding certificate and have completed Swim Ireland vetting. You must hold a Swim Ireland Level 1 Assistant Swimming Coach qualification.

Tuesday 4th June                     09:00 – 19:00     

Wednesday 5th June               05:30 – 18:00

Thursday 6th June                    09:00 – 19:00

Friday 7th June                         09:00 – 19:00

Saturday 8th June                    08:00 – 14:00

Sunday 9th June                       10:00 – 14:00

Theory        –      UL Sport Arena Wet Poolside Class, Castletroy, Limerick

Practical     –      UL Sport Arena Pool, Castletroy, Limerick

Details

This is a Blended Learning programme which means that candidates’ complete part of the theory online. You will receive an email with details of how to login to our Swim Training and Education Platform (STEP) towards the end of February. You will have until a week before the first face to face date to successfully complete your online learning.

The Swim Ireland Level 2 Swimming Coach qualification is a practical qualification, which develops the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be a Swim Ireland Level 2 Swimming Coach and is made up of a series of learning outcomes and assessment criteria. Assessment is through the completion of a series of task classroom based and poolside.

Assessment

Assessment is the responsibility of the Tutor and will cover the following:

Practical teaching through the use of observation, oral and/or written and recorded against a checklist of competence related to specific outcomes

Planning, preparation and other associated tasks

A selection of group work, presentations, group tasks, worksheets, games and pool work and other activities deemed appropriate by the assessor

Online Learning

You will be expected to complete the online learning  before attending the face to face course days. You will need access to a computer/tablet and Internet access to complete your online learning.

National Youth Conference 2019

Swim Ireland are hosting their first National Youth Conference on May 4th 2019 in Dublin (poster attached). The day will involve 2 Keynote speakers (to be announced), 2 workshops and a number of other interactive sessions. The day is built around Leadership, Resilience and the Voices of Young People.

We see this as an opportunity for our young people to gain skills in Public Speaking, Nutrition and Well Being; as well as interacting with their peers in a fun environment and hear from experienced speakers/athletes in these areas. The event has been limited to 100 young people 13+ as we really want to ensure to maximise their experience and learning.

The event is €10.00 and each participant will receive a t-shirt.
