Swim Ireland Cork Performance Squad

The establishment of a Cork Performance Squad gives Cork athletes a unique opportunity to train with like-minded athletes, thus giving them a better opportunity of furthering their career to a National, European and World level of swimming.

As part of the arrangement, Brookfield Leisure Centre is providing all facilities while coaching personnel will be supported by Swim Ireland.

At the announcement of the establishment of the squad, Peter Banks, Swim Ireland’s National Performance Director said “We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Cork Performance Squad and are grateful to the Brookfield Leisure Centre for helping us in that regard”.

“This follows the success of other initiatives run by Swim Ireland who have High Performance Centre’s in Galway, Dublin and Limerick which have already led to some outstanding success in the pool. It is our hope that squads like these will create an environment of excellence for all our aspiring athletes so that they can follow in the footsteps of Ireland’s current swimming stars”.

The Cork City and County Swimming Squad was established in December 2011 under the direction of Tom Cross, Richard Cassidy and Deirdre Cunningham and the squad which will now be known as the Cork Performance Squad, now boasts a total of 25 athletes from an initial base of 15.

“We are delighted with this partnership announced here today and huge credit must go to Swim Ireland, Dolphin & Sundays Well SC, coaches and of course to Brookfield Leisure Centre”.

“The pilot squad scheme was a shot in the dark in some ways but we always knew there was talent and it was just a case of focusing our resources on a core squad of 15 athletes.

“There have already been notable improvements as the Squad initially had one athlete on the National Youth Development Squad, but this has now increased to four athletes and we are confident that the Cork and regional representation on national squads like this one will only increase thanks to this Cork Performance Centre”.

Membership for the Squad is based on age related FINA qualifying times, which are reviewed by Swim Ireland on a yearly basis.
